Press Conference of Philadelphia Delegation to the Biggest Climate March in History At noon on Tuesday (Sept 16) there will be a press conference at the north side of City Hall about the Philadelphia presence — probably 3,000 people -- at the Climate March in NYC next Sunday. Speakers will come from labor, the environmental movement, & Mayor Nutter’s office. And I’ve been invited to speak on behalf of the Philadelphia communities of faith & spirit -- Interfaith Power & Light of Philadelphia, as well as The Shalom Center. Mishkan Shalom’s Bus #2 still has some seats available. If you are interested, please click to brownpapertickets/event/868198. The following review of Philadelphia involvement is from Jonathan Lipman, coordinator for 350 Philly. Shalom, salaam, paz, peace Arthur FACTS / NUMBERS about the Climate March • The Philadelphia area alone has organized over 50 bus loads. That represents more than 2,500 people. With other buses coming online and plenty of people taking the train or public buses, we expect it will be more than 3,000 in total. ◦ Hundreds of thousands are expected in New York City. ◦ It’s a massive decentralized effort so exact numbers can’t be known. • More than 50 organizations in Philadelphia are participating. It includes: ◦ labor ◦ faith ◦ social justice ◦ environmental ◦ business ◦ student ◦ professional ◦ community ◦ Nationwide, over 1,000 organizations nationwide are participating. • The March steps off at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday the 21st, from Columbus Circle in Midtown Manhattan and passes by Times Square before ending on 34th Street. (Where the Miracles happen!) • The March is Sept. 21 because world leaders, including President Obama, are meeting at the UN later that week to discuss next steps on climate change. We are marching to tell them that we demand real action on climate and we demand it now. • The March will be led by some of the groups hardest hit by global warming: Native Americans and other indigenous peoples, people still suffering from Hurricane Sandy, farmworkers, and other communities in the path of the oncoming storm. ◦ After that, you’ll see dozens of different communities marching together - unions and families and green businesses and veterans and scientists and LGBT groups and communities of faith & spirit.. ◦ We will make sure Philadelphia’s voice is heard.
