Press Release: EXHIBITION -- A Lighthouse in New York: The Antigua & Barbuda Progressive Society Inc. Established in 1934 by 22 Antiguans in Harlem under the leadership of Bishop James P. Roberts to aid fellow countrymen who had immigrated to New York during the Great Depression, the ABPS has dedicated itself to the principle of cultivating and promoting social and intellectual activities as well as providing charitable assistance to its people—both in New York and on the islands. With their headquarters (affectionately called The Antigua and Barbuda House) located at 12 West 122 Street, the ABPS remains embedded in the Harlem community. This exhibit commemorates 80 years since the founding of the Antigua and Barbuda Progressive Society. Featuring materials from records recently donated to the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the exhibit places the Society in diasporic context, giving us a glimpse of how early 20th century Caribbean immigrants settled into New York, revealing the diverse cultural and political intersections of their lives and illuminating the ways they contributed both to their homelands and New York City. The exhibit runs from September 27, 2013 through January 4, 2014. An opening reception and panel discussion about the history and work of the Society and the relevance of the records will be held at the Schomburg Center on September 27 at 6 pm.
