Press Release Foreign Secretary Mr. Arjun Bahadur Thapa, Member of the Nepalese delegation to the Sixty-eighth Session of the United Nations General Assembly, participated in the High-Level Event on Sustainable Energy for the LDCs today. In his statement, Mr. Thapa emphasized on the need for ensuring sustainable energy to achieve the goals of sustainable development, and expressed Nepal’s support for the UN Secretary-General’s initiative on ‘Sustainable Energy for All”. The Event was organized jointly by the President of the Republic of Benin and the Prime Minister of Norway in collaboration with United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS). The Secretary General of the United Nations, and other high-ranking dignitaries were present on the occasion. Mr. Thapa further said that sustainable energy constitutes a game changer for accelerated development in the 21st century. He added that the Istanbul Programme of Action recognized it as a priority sector to build LDCs’ productive capacity to attain sustained economic growth and sustainable development. In this regard, he underlined the importance of ensuring access to affordable, reliable and renewable energy and related technologies, and efficient use and distribution of energy for the LDCs. Mr. Thapa also highlighted Nepal’s integrated approach to energy sector development, measures to enhance efficiency in the generation, transmission and distribution of energy, and major focus on expanding power infrastructure and increasing capacity for energy generation, especially renewable energy, with a view to attaining graduation from LDC status by 2022. He commended the Energy+ initiative spearheaded by Norway along with other partners for supporting the national efforts in this regard. Mr. Thapa underscored the need for investment in energy production, infrastructure expansion, technological development and diffusion, and capacity building to achieve the vision of Sustainable Energy for All. He added that robust and enhanced financial and technical support is necessary for Nepal to realize this vision. He stressed the need for big hydro project to harness the huge hydro potentials of Nepal and called for foreign direct investment in this area. The delegation of Nepal also took part in the High Level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Realization of Millennium Development Goals and other internationally agreed development goals for persons with disabilities. It also took part in the panel discussion on the success of MDGs, which was an initiative of the Secretary-General. The third plenary meeting of Sixty-eighth Session of the United Nations General Assembly held today adopted an outcome document of the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the realization of the Millennium Development Goals and other internationally agreed development goals for persons with disability. Later in the evening the Foreign Secretary Mr. Arjun Bahadur Thapa, was received in audience by H.E. Barack Obama, President of the United States of America during the reception hosted by the President and Mrs. Obama in honor of the Heads of Delegation to the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly Foreign Secretary Mr. Arjun Bahadur Thapa and members of Nepalese delegation arrived New York yesterday to participate in the Sixty-eighth Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Mr. Thapa was received by Ms. Sewa Lamsal Adhikari, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations and other senior officials of the Mission on arrival at the airport.
