Press Release Hon’ble Union Minister for Sports Sarbananda Sonowal wishes good luck to Incheon-bound Indian Athletes New Delhi, September 20, 2014: A buoyant 49-member Indian athletics team will be leaving for Incheon Asian Games 2014 late in the night today after a emotional send-off function, organised here by the Athletics Federation of India. On this occasion, the chief guest for the function, Hon’ble Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Skill Development and Entrepreunership, Mr Sarbananda Sonowal greeted all the members of the Indian Athletics Team individually and wished them luck for their competition in Incheon. The Honb’le Union Sports Minister said, “Athletics has brought glory to India and produced many stalwarts ever since the Asian Games began in 1951. Im sure the Indian Athletics Team will fight for every medals in Incheon. In the previous Asian Games in 2010 you won a total of 12 medals. I hope this time you win at least 12 gold medals.” Mr Sonowal, who is an avid sportsman himself and has a penchant for cricket, football and badminton, assured the athletes that his ministry will extend every possible support to assist them for winning medals at international competitions. He said, “The Ministry of Sports will do everything under its control to take Indian athletics to great heights. I take this opportunity to assure all the athletes that the Government of India will extend every support to its sportspersons to win medals in future competitions.” The Hon’ble Minister also congratulated the AFI for the wonderful performance of the athletes. Mr Sonowal said, “I congratulate the AFI for the good job and I hope they will further increase their efficiency to ensure that the athletes achieve bigger laurels for the country in the future.” On this occasion, the AFI Secretary Mr CK Valson said, “We are grateful to the Hon’ble Union Minister for motivating our athletes and supporting them and thank him for his inspiring presence. The AFI will ensure that it works in complete cohesion with the Sports Ministry to provide the best facilities to the athletes and help them excel.” The 49-member athletics team, led by chief coach and triple Asian Games gold medalist Bahadur Singh leaving tonight, comprises of 21 women athletes, 14 men athletes, nine coaches, one manager in addition to four support staff, two each for men and women athletes.
