****Press Release**** On Saturday the 4th of June an incident occurred in Clonmel town centre at around 10.15am. The incident involved a man in his 50’s who began to feel unwell outside Connolly’s menswear. Brian Hogg who was working in the store at the time had noticed the man who was clearly in difficulty. Brian had called for the help of off duty Fire-Fighter Paddy Pyke who was in the vicinity fundraising for local charities. Paddy who is a trained Emergency First Responder called for an ambulance then assessed the patient and asked Brian to run to Willie Walsh’s Barbers and get the defibrillator which had been strategically located there for such an emergency. Paddy then began to give chest compressions to the man until Brian or the ambulance service arrived. As the event unfolded it was Brian who returned with the defibrillator which allowed Paddy to give further care to the patient. Paddy applied the pads of the machine to the man’s chest and assessed his heart rhythm. Paddy then administered a shock to the gentleman and resumed Chest compressions. The ambulance service then arrived with Paramedics Rory Dullard and Sean O’ Regan and off-duty Paramedic Jim Hogan who continued the care of the patient until he was brought to hospital in South Tipperary General and then onto Cork University Hospital. The man is in a stable condition and in post-resuscitation care at this moment and time. The Clonmel Heartsaver committee would like to commend the actions of Fire Fighter Paddy Pyke and Brian Hogg of Connolly’s Menswear for their actions on the day. A husband/father is alive today because of their quick thinking and deliberate actions This event shows exactly what the Irish Heart Foundation have been teaching and promoting in regards to the Chain of Survival. All Links in the Chain of Survival were used which greatly improves the chances of survival from Cardiac Arrest. The Clonmel Heartsaver would also like to acknowledge John Ryan of Connolly’s Menswear who provided assistance with traffic and crowd control, William Walsh’s Barbers for all their help with housing of the defibrillator. Also to all of the business who help to keep the Clonmel Heartsaver alive by ways of housing the machines, funding, promotional work etc. Without all of your help we would not be able to keep these vital life-saving machines serviced and operational. Finally I would like to thank Dr.Martin Rouse who is the Medical Director for the Clonmel Heartsaver and whose help and expertise are invaluable. Hero’s walk amongst us every day, but what is a hero? They are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary. A hero is any person who is intent on making this world a better place for all people. Yours Faithfully, Andrew Laste.
