Press Release | Thursday, December 18 Ward votes to save bedroom tax and condemn firefighters David Ward was one of 35 Liberal Democrat MPs who voted with the Tories to save the bedroom tax just hours after he and his colleagues helped push through a measure which slashes firefighters pension rights. The mask has been ripped off to reveal an even uglier face than their coalition partners, the ugly party, the Tories, said George Galloway. The Lib Dems are complete hypocrites. Earlier this year they were pledging to scrap the tax, now they have saved it with their votes. If they had voted alongside me and Labour, if they had even abstained, then wed be on the way to scrapping this hated tax. Shame on them. Shame on David Ward. His constituents will, Im sure, be visiting that shame on him with their votes in just a few months time. More than 500,000 household in Britain are understood to be affected by the tax which reduces benefits where rooms are deemed to be surplus to requirement. Forty-eight hours earlier Ward and his colleagues had voted to cut firefighters pensions entitlement, pushing retirement age to 60 and increasing their pension contributions. The Fire Brigades Union says that it is unreasonable to expect firefighters who are 60 to have the same fitness levels as those in their 20s, warning some could be left facing the sack or with a severely reduced pension. There is nothing liberal about them, said Galloway of the Lib Dems. They will do and say anything to stay in power, but these days are shortly coming to an end. Galloway also called on Janette Sunderland, the Lib Dem leader of Bradford council, to condemn Wards and her partys vote to retain the hated tax.
