Press Release Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Prapan AM Games names Hispanic Member to its Board of Directors due to the pressure exerted by The Hispanic Canadian Heritage Council TORONTO, August 11, 2014. The Hispanic Canadian Heritage Council (HCHC) takes great satisfaction in announcing that due to the suggestions and the pressure exerted by our community particularly by the HCHC, a Canadian of Hispanic origin has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am / Parapan Am games organizing committee. The suggestions and pressures were applied during various high level meetings between the community leaders represented in the HCHC and executives of the games, members of Toronto City Council, The Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Ministers of the Ontario and Canadian Governments and the International Sports Associations. The organization also conducted an open national and international media campaign to bring to the forefront the issues surrounding the games. Thanks to this hard fought battle by the HCHC asking for the equal participation of the Pan American communities in the organizing and implementation processes of the games is that in recent months more Pan American professionals are being hired in key roles of the organizing body of the sporting event including the naming of Victor Garcia to the Board of Directors. Given that our community is large and diverse, obviously there will be people and organizations that won’t be completely satisfied with the person that was selected to represent the interests of the Hispanic community since there was not a consultation process with the community. Furthermore, people might question why this individual was selected since he doesn’t have deep roots in the community or a history of community service to the community. None the less, the HCHC considers and hopes that the recent move by the Wynne government as a step in the right direction to resolve the organizational issues that surround the games. This move will help to bring unification and will achieve the success of the great sporting and cultural event in 2015. Once again, we congratulate the Provincial, Municipal governments and the Games organizing committee for the decisions taken in the last months to include more Pan American professionals in the processes of the games and hope to see that the suggestions provided by the HCHC, a coalition of Hispanic community organizations in Toronto, continue to be implemented for the betterment of the games and our country.
