Press Release by the President of the Patriotic Front Dr Guy L Scott MP 13th November 2014 SCOTT: DEMOCRACY MUST PREVAIL IN PF Acting President Guy Scott has called upon all members and supporters of the Patriotic Front to respect the democratic principles that underpin the party’s constitution. “The party constitution is clear”, Scott said. “The PF selects its President at a General Conference (a full national party convention) with wide representation from all Provinces. Thereafter, the constitution gives wide powers to the President, including calling of meetings, setting the agenda, and appointment of officials within the Central Committee. Anyone who says that the Central Committee can simply select the party President without calling a General Conference is deliberately misleading and inviting disorder”. The acting President added that he was disturbed by reports that some Central Committee members wished to select a candidate without a General Conference, since this would ignore laid down procedure and transparent democratic process. “There are a range of people who may wish to seek election”’ he said. “A democratic process will enable a large number of party members to scrutinize the candidates, and to unite around the candidate who obtains the majority support”. “We cannot endorse decisions through intimidation and disorder. Any attempt to short-cut this process or to exclude the rank and file Conference members will create anarchy, result in damaging splits, alienate the masses who trusted us with their support and votes, and very likely pave way for the opposition to reap the benefit”. Citing articles 52(1) and 61(d) of the PF constitution, Dr Scott has given instructions to start preparations for a General Conference at Mulungushi Rock of Authority in Kabwe, scheduled to take place on or before 29th November 2014. “Democrats, patriots and people of good will are all supporting this simple process.
