Press Statement YB. Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein Minister of Defence, Malaysia Moscow, Russia - 10 September 2014 Today, I had a meeting with the Defence Minister of the Russian Federation, HE Army General Sergei Shoigu and the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, HE Grigoriy Borisovich Karasin. Both of them conveyed their heartfelt thoughts to Malaysia for the two major aviation tragedies. My counterpart HE Shoigu and I discussed and agreed to work together to bring the perpetrators of the MH17 incident to justice. During the meeting, I have requested for Russias assistance to ensure early safe passage for the international team to re-enter the crash site. HE Shoigu explained that the situation at the site is still unstable but assured assistance once the conditions have improved. Given the short time frame that we are working with as winter is fast approaching, HE Shoigus assurance on this matter is very much appreciated. In addition, we also discussed on bilateral relations, particularly on enhancing military cooperation between Malaysia and Russia. Later in the day, the delegation and I met with HE Grigoriy Borisovich Karasin, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister. HE Karasin was very supportive of our efforts to negotiate for early safe passage into the crash site and also pledged to continue rendering support and assistance to Malaysia where needed. Both HE Karasin and myself also agreed on the need for the MH17 investigation to be conducted impartially and in complete transparency. Tonight, I will be departing to the Netherlands to meet with my counterpart, HE Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the Minister of Defence for the Netherlands, to continue discussions regarding cooperation on the investigation into the MH17 incident aswell as promoting defence exchanges between Malaysia and the Netherlands. It is my hope that all stakeholders in the MH17 incident are able to peel away and put aside any other considerations they may have and focus all our efforts in continuing to search and recover for the remaining victims and debris of MH17. The first and second leg of our mission to Ukraine and Russia has been very constructive, especially in being inclusive and bringing on board all stakeholders towards that objective. I am quite confident that we will receive the same response and commitment from our counterparts in the Netherlands. - end -
