Press Statement on BN victory in Teluk Intan I would like to congratulate Datuk Mah Siew Keong for winning Teluk Intan by election. Winning the by election is a morale booster to Gerakan in particular and to Barisan Nasional in general. An analysis of the voting trend clearly indicates that there is a return of Chinese and Indian support to the BN Government. However, I will not be gloating that Chinese support is back to BN. It could be a flash in a pan. Why do I say so? 1. One must not forget that Mah has served in the same constituency for 2 terms as MP including 1 term as Deputy Minister. He is a local boy having failed twice in 12th and 13th General Election but never give up. He continues to serve the local community and this has won him many support in this by election compared to a DAP newbie. 2. The promise of being appointed Minister finds traction among voters in local community. It is not often for a local boy to be given a chance to serve in the Cabinet. 3. The low voter turn up of 66.7% compared to 80% in the last General Election is fatal the DAP candidate. To the younger generation of voters, they know it is difficult to change the government even if they come back. So why bother? 4. PAS insists on implementation of Hudud may prove to be Achilles heel of Pakatan Rakyat cooperation. This issue was fully exploited during the by election. 5. After the overwhelming support from Chinese and Indian community, DAP has threw caution to the wind and continue to assume Chinese voters will not change. Parachuting a newbie despite resistance from the local warlord must have broken the camels back. Hence, it is laughable for some MCA leaders to claim in their eagerness to apple polish the President’s shoe that the win is because of Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai’s leadership. One must not forget less than 2 weeks ago the same group of leaders have forgotten they were part of the decision maker to allow DAP’s walk over in Bukit Gelugor by election.
