Press release Western Flyer Wander Sunday 15th September 2013, 11.00a.m. – 2.00 p.m. Discover Swindon’s best-kept secret, the Western Flyer, on the ‘Western Flyer Wander’ on Sunday 15th September. Join this 2 mile organised walk, part of the …marking time…along the Western Flyer participatory arts project, funded by Swindon Travel Choices, which aims to increase awareness and use of this cycle and pedestrian route, rich in heritage and social history. The Western Flyer Wander is being organised by Create Studios in partnership with Swindon Health Walks and the Health Improvement team at Swindon Borough Council, and funded by Swindon Travel Choices. The Western Flyer begins at Sheppard Street underpass, an ancient drove road, cuts under Great Western Way, then heads out west to peaceful green spaces alongside the River Way, a tributary of the River Thames. Discover how easy it is to make the journey from the town centre to West Swindon on foot (or by bike), avoiding the traffic, improving your fitness and saving money on fuel too. The Western Flyer Wander, led by a small team of artists and volunteer walk leaders, invites you to enjoy a walk along the route, stopping for fun and imaginative activities using the Western Flyer tricycle machine to generate stories and thoughts about the route. There will be a lunch stop near the River Ray, so bring a picnic, and a chance to record and film thoughts and responses to the route using digital media equipment on board the CreateMobile. Also during lunch you can learn more about Swindon Travel Choices and the wealth of cycle and walking routes in Swindon, pick up information on walking for health and local walking groups and even do some blackberry picking and smoothie making! The walk will return to the start of the route by approximately 2.00 p.m. The Western Flyer is a level and traffic-free two-mile cycle and walking route linking the town centre with West Swindon. As well as encountering some green and semi-rural spaces the route takes in some of Swindon’s most notable and historical landmarks: the Oasis, famed for attracting the attention of the Gallagher brothers and characterised by its landmark dome; the site of the former gasholder on Iffley Road, which was part of the Great Western Railway’s own gasworks; the Bruce Street Bridges, formerly the terminus for the Swindon town centre to Rodbourne electric tram route and the Spectrum building (formerly known as the Renault building), in West Swindon which was designed by Lord Norman Foster. The Western Flyer Wander invites you to contribute your stories about this fascinating part of Swindon, to help make new short films, a new app and a new archive of photographic images that will be shared across Swindon in Spring 2014. To join the Western Flyer Wander, please meet at Sheppard Street underpass, close to the railway station at 10.45 a.m. on Sunday 15th September 2013. The Western Flyer Wander is open to all ages and will be supported by trained volunteer walk leaders. The Western Flyer Wander is one of a series of community events taking place as part of...marking time...along the Western Flyer, which is an exciting participatory arts project being delivered by Create Studios in its 30th anniversary year. Led by artist Scott Farlow, the project is part of the new enhancements to the Western Flyer cycle and pedestrian route. The project aims to increase the profile of the route by raising awareness of the rich heritage and social history that it passes through, and using the archive of local photographer William Hooper.
