Prestigious Award received by Richland County Sheriffs Department Public Information Officer Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott is proud to announce that on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast and Awards Ceremony held at the Wiley Kennedy Family Life Center located at 1037 Eastman Street, Columbia, SC, Senator John L. Scott, Jr. presented Richland County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Lieutenant Curtis Wilson with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major for Justice Award! Sheriff Leon Lott stated that Curtis Wilson is an incredibly experienced and dedicated public information officer with an exceptional background; Curtis began his career in radio and moved to news broadcasting, including working as an Anchor for a local television station, and then added Public Information Officer for the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff stated that Curtis began working for the Richland County Sheriff’s Department about 5 years ago and has significantly impacted the department’s communication with the community ever since. Pastor Eddie W. Davis, a founder of the Midlands Coalition of Churches, stated that the coalition was formed 24 years ago by Pastors throughout the community with the goals of helping to solve problems in our communities and to develop positive programs for youth. In addition, Willie H. Bryant, Executive Director of the Midlands Coalition of Churches, stated that this acclaimed award is given out every year to a former or current law enforcement officer who is active among the community and is passionate about ensuring the integrity of the community. Sheriff Leon Lott stated that he is very proud of Curtis and believes he is very deserving of the award; his hard work, dedication and compassion are without a doubt instantly recognizable to anyone who meets him. As a Public Information Officer, Curtis is a liaison between the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and the community through working with local media outlets to get information out to the public, participating in forums, attending and organizing community events, speaking to a wide variety of groups of people, including students, and much more. Sheriff Leon Lott commends Lt. Curtis Wilson for his service to the department and the community. The Sheriff added that Lt. Wilson’s immense service and commitment to Richland County is a perfect example of the passion that the Richland County Sheriff’s Department applies to our community oriented policing strategy which is helping to build unity in the community and improve the quality of life for ALL citizens.
