Pretty cool, just got this letter. Hi Renee, Every city and town in BC had municipal elections last weekend, and the big winner was marijuana reform! Sensible BC was pleased to see cannabis-friendly mayors re-elected in Vancouver, Burnaby and Coquitlam, while mayors we opposed were defeated in New Westminster and Prince Rupert. In fact Prince Ruperts new Mayor, Lee Brain, was a registered canvasser for Sensible BC during last years signature campaign! But for our core team of organizers and volunteers, the sweetest election victory was seeing Deb Kozak become the new Mayor of Nelson, with a slim 281 vote margin of victory! Nelson Mayor John Dooley had been very hostile to even discussing cannabis reform, and we have a lot of supporters in the region. With Deb Kozak backing decriminalization and offering a viable alternative, we decided to support her campaign. We ran a volunteer phone bank from our Vancouver office for a week before the election, calling hundreds of our supporters in Nelson to help get out the vote. We also sent out a recorded message to every landline in town, from a long-time local resident endorsing Kozak. This would have been a closer race without our efforts. Click here to hear Dooley blame Sensible BC for his loss. So congratulations to everyone on Team Sensible! Weve got new friends in office all across the province, building momentum towards ending cannabis prohibition. This proves that we can have a strong influence and make real change happen when we work together. Next year well be doing the same thing, as we prepare to elect a cannabis-friendly federal government in 2015. Onwards to Victory! Dana Larsen Director, Sensible BC
