Pretty proud of this kid. After taking the summer off from softball, Bri has jumped back in with both feet on a new team made up of a lot of old and a few new friends...the Lexington Hurricanes. Today was day one of our first tournament together and it was a day of ups and downs. We faced a great team right out of the box and suffered a 16-6 loss. With no rest between the first game and the second, the Hurricanes bounced back and picked up a solid 7-5 win to complete pool play 1-1. The girls looked a lot more relaxed in game 2 and resembled the team weve been watching practice over the past few weeks. Heading into bracket play, we faced the same team we had just played...but our bats had cooled down and we were only able to score 1 run in the top of the 1st. We gave up 6 runs in the bottom of that inning and quickly found ourselves playing catchup. The girls went to work and with a runner on first, Bri got her only clean hit of the day when it mattered most...driving the ball to left for a double and scoring the runner who was on first. That sparked a 6 run inning of our own and gave us a 7-6 lead heading into the bottom of the 2nd. Unfortunately...we gave up another 5 runs to the opposition and again were in the hole...11-7 heading into the third. We each scored a run in the 3rd inning and as we began the 4th we knew the time limit was drawing near. With one out and two runners on base, the other team made a rare error, throwing the ball into left field which allowed our two runners to score and bring us to within 2 runs with only one out. But 5 pitches later saw us strike out and fly out to end the game. We learned a lot in our first three games together...and we will try to apply what weve learned when we return to Salisbury Sunday morning at 9:00 to face our next opponent. Now in the losers bracket, well have to win to continue playing. Bri had a pretty good return after her summer break. In 4 trips to the plate, she hit a double, reached on an error and struck out twice, had a stolen base and scored two runs. She also had a couple of solid games in CF...no errors after several balls were hit her way. Go Hurricanes!
