Preview! Why do some contemporary composers know how to write for the voice and others do not? One of the largest complaints from my singers who are hired for contemporary gigs is that the tessitura is wrong for the voice type, very little melody or legato line, and little understanding of how to write appropriate breathing spots. The largest problem is that many composers write for the voice as though it were just an instrument, a machine if you will. We work with muscles, cartilage, resonance and vocal bands that have a limit to their stretch. We are not machines. More later...........David
