Price of war: NWA tribesmen demand compensation Say people of the agency are being called terrorists across the world. Residents of North Waziristan Agency (NWA) on Thursday sought compensation for tribal people for their “irreparable loss” due to wars in the region for the last several decades. Led by Advocate Dr Zafar Shaheen at Peshawar Press Club, tribesmen said the ongoing conflict in the region was forced on the people of the area. “People of Waziristan are known as terrorists across the world,” said Shaheen, adding their property and businesses were beyond repair. He stressed tribesmen are not terrorists; they are peace-loving and want peace to prevail in the tribal belt. They said relief packages announced by both the federal and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) governments were insufficient to make up for their losses. Flanked by Pak-Afghan Chamber of Commerce President Essa Khan Rohani and Ali Daraz Khan, Shaheen claimed millions of tribesmen have been displaced, but successive governments had not bothered to make proper arrangements for the affected families. He maintained the internally displaced persons (IDP) of NWA first faced the problem of transportation and were now having a hard time accessing relief packages at IDP camps. Rohani lamented that the tribal belt, especially Waziristan, had become a buffer zone due to the policies of successive governments, as a result of which residents were suffering physically, psychologically and economically.
