Pride has many children but none so ugly as Smugness. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves, Philippians 2.3. (Theres a great Bible word for the opposite of smugness, Lowliness. Jesus speaks of himself as being lowly in heart (Matthew 11.29), Paul characterizes his ministry as serving the Lord with it (Acts 20.19) and in Psalm 138.6 God is said to pay close attention to the lowly but straight-arms the smug.)
