Prime Minister Modi in Nagaland: I promise that it will not take another 10 years for a prime minister to return to this beautiful part of the country. As Christmas is approaching, I would also like to share some good news with you. He proceeded to highlight the projects that have already been initiated for the North East in the past six months: - New railway lines criss-crossing the region. - A 24/7 power generation roadmap, including a heavy emphasis on sustainable power generation. - New world-class sporting institutes and infrastructure. - My favourite - making the North East a national and international hub for organic food production, including the setting up of key agricultural institutes throughout the region. - The establishment of textiles (traditional, not industrial) manufacturing hubs in every state of the North-Eastern region. - A massive new scholarship scheme for (10,000!) North-Eastern students to study throughout India. - Additional student and faculty exchange programmes with Indias top educational institutes, including the IITs. - Inducting youth from North Eastern states into police forces of cities such as New Delhi. As CM, Mr Modi once said that the key to the development of the North East would not just depend on the economy, power and railways, but also on meaningful integration with the rest of India. As PM, his emphasis on creating new national sporting heroes from the region, getting more youths to become national super achievers through high-quality education, and making the region a net contributor - materially and psychologically - to the rest of Indias successes (i.e. through high quality organic produce and textiles, elevating the calibre of North Eastern educational institutions to amongst the highest within the country, or via policing in Delhi) are all ways in which he has precipitated this process. All of the above is long overdue for this stunning part of the country, and Im sure that my friends from the North East will begin witnessing tangible results within the next five years or so. ~ Abhey Singh
