Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama offered his heart-felt apologies to all Fijians who have been affected by the sewage spill that occurred last year in December at four miles near Cunningham. “I would like to make a humble apology; you have suffered in a way that has pains me as your Prime Minister. It has been particularly heart-breaking to see the extent of the pollution caused by the sewage and the disruption that it has caused the people who live around the affected foreshore; the stench, the inability to go fishing – all the things we take for granted in our beautiful environment. But like I said we are going to fix this problem and I ask for patience and support from our fellow Fijians.” Bainimarama also highlighted that Fijians have suffered for years from a lack of reliable infrastructure, saying this was one of the reasons why these pipes had collapsed. “We have all paid a heavy price for the decades of neglect by previous Governments in maintaining the infrastructure of which the carriage of our sewage and water depends. It has been a collective failure over more than 50 years not to invest in new infrastructure. As our economy improves I can assure you all of one thing my Government is determined to fix this problem once and for all.” He made these comments while addressing staff of the Water Authority of Fiji at their second annually awards night. - See more at: fbc.fj/fiji/26296/bainimarama-addresses-problem#sthash.fdJ0iKXt.dpuf
