Primum non nocere -- how much destruction, death, and grief might have been averted had people only given greater weight to this venerable aphorism: first do no harm. Its observance would bring most do-gooder projects and virtually the whole of politics to a screeching halt. In reality, however, those who seek or pretend to do good rarely so much as consider the harm they might bring about in the process, much less offer compelling reasons to believe that the good effects probably will outweigh the bad.
