Prince Albert II speaks at the UN General Assembly Taking to the stand for the first time since the Principality of Monaco became the 183rd member state to join the United Nations two decades ago, Prince Albert II addressed the General Assembly with a poignant and measured speech. He commented on a range of current issues, such as the events in Syria and Kenya, as well as reinforcing Monaco’s position on human rights and the protection of the seas. Prince Albert II opened his speech on 23rd September with a few words about his father and his dedication to playing a responsible and solid role in world affairs. The Monegasque prince also spoke of Monaco’s reasons for joining the ranks of the UN, saying, “Faithful to its principles and past, the Principality of Monaco wanted to contribute more actively towards peacemaking, a notion to which it has been firmly involved in over the centuries.”
