Prince Avalanche (2013) When you look at Paul Rudds IMDb page, youll see that he is most known for his comedic ability in such films as I Love You, Man and Dinner for Shmucks. The reason that he is so popular in this particular genre is because he knows how to deliver a great joke and become a likeable presence at the same time. Here, Rudd tries something different and it works 50/50 to his advantage in Prince Avalanche. In 1988, fires broke out all over the state of Texas, and destroyed many homes in the process. But alas, construction began once again. When it comes to repairing areas of the Texas National State Park, that job belongs to Alvin (Paul Rudd) and Lance (Emile Hirsch). Alvin is currently in a relationship with Lances sister. That is the reason that Lance has this job in the first place. Day after day, its the same job over and over again. They only have each other to talk to and as the days pass, certain revelations are brought out. In the end, their friendship is tested as these secrets come to light. One thing is for sure, David Gordon Green knows how to capture an image. The cinematography is absolutely astounding. Every area is captured in the best possible way. Both Rudds and Hirschs performances were good but nothing impressive. But that is where I had a major problem with this film. The cinematography and camera work may have been great but the personalities of these characters were very uninteresting. Most of the moments where they had conversations felt like filler so we can move along to the next random scene. Occasionally, theyll have an interesting conversation. The plot is nearly non-existent and puts all of its weight on the leads. But that is where the film goes down, at least for me. The visuals are reason enough to see this film once and then never again. In closing, Prince Avalanche is beautiful to look at but tedious to watch with bland characteristics and a non-existent plot.
