Principal Guest conductor Claude Villaret leads Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) with soloist Czech violinist Jiří Vodička to a celebratory evening for the 40th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Thailand and the Czech Republic. Jiří Vodička is one of the most distinguished Czech violinists today. In his early youth, he gained much attention by winning a number of competitions. In 2002, he won the 1st prize at the International Violin Competition in Hradec Kralové with a special prize for the best participant in the Master classes of Václav Hudeček and in 2004, he was awarded the 1st prize at the International Violin Competition Louis Spohr in Weimar. On his second visit performing with TPO, Mr. Vodička will perform the Violin Concerto in G minor, Op. 26 by Max Bruch. The concerto was first completed in 1866 and the first performance was given on 24 April 1866 by Otto von Königslow with Bruch himself conducting. The concerto was then considerably revised with help from celebrated violinist Joseph Joachim and completed in its present form in 1867. The premiere of the revised concerto was given by Joachim in Bremen on 5 January 1868 with Karl Martin Rheinthaler conducting. In the second half of the program, the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of its principal guest conductor Maestro Villaret will perform Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88, (B. 163) by Antonín Dvořák. The piece was composed in 1889 at Vysoká u Příbramě, Bohemia, on the occasion of his election to the Bohemian Academy of Science, Literature and Arts and Dvořák conducted the premiere on year later in Prague, on 2 February 1890. In contrast to other symphonies of both the composer and the period, the music is cheerful and optimistic.
