Principals and teachers of schools have been advised to look beyond teaching as a means of livelihood. The member representing Nsit Ubium Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Onofiok Luke, made the call today when he led Old Students of Lutheran High School Obot Idim on a condolence visit to the family of a late principal of the school, Rev. Offiong Idiong. Barr. Luke admonished school teachers to consider mentoring as key to transformation of the child. He said it was necessary for teachers to venture into entrepreneurial development to enable them build capacity for self reliance. Hon. Luke noted Rev. Offiong Idiong’s demise as a monumental loss to the state an the nation at large. According to the lawmaker, “My principal (Rev. Offiong Idiong) was a disciplinarian. Before now we taught he was harsh, but what we came to see in the larger society has made us appreciate the fact that he was a father and he always looked forward to seeing us become productive citizens. He prepared us better for the society, which he already had an experience of...” He added. In response, wife of the deceased, Mrs. Offiong Idiong thanked the Old students for choosing to visit the family and prayed God to reward them. She commended the association for holding unto the core values of the institution in their various life endeavours. She also mentioned that the late disciplinarian will be committed to mother earth on Friday 15th August 2014 at his residence in Ikot Iko, Ibesikpo Asutan LGA of Akwa Ibom State. Earlier, the family head of Nung Udo Ima, Elder Francis Edet Okon extolled the sterling qualities of the late principal and urged the former students to continue supporting the family. He opined that Rev. Offiong Idiong’s exemplary lifestyle should be emulated by the old students. The late Rev. Offiong Idiong is survived by his wife,one son and two daughters and other relatives. Present at the condolence visit were: Bassey Ekefere, Ekemini Ukim, Aniekan Ekah, Ubong Ekereuke, Ubong Udobong, Iboro Nkro, Ubon Peters, Ubon Ekop, Ime Wellington, Akanimo Success, and a host of other former students of the institution.
