Printing is a sensitive medium. Changes is the environment—such as atmospheric pressure and humidity, or variances between printing plates and paper—can cause changes in color, value, and pigment densities on the printed page. Simply inputting the ratios that worked for previous printings, unfortunately will not produce the same results for future printings. This is why we need to be present during each printing session to ensure that the images in the books are represented as intended. We inspect each press sheet and make shifts in color and ink densities to ensure accurate reproductions. Here I am looking through a loop to see the individual ink dots that constitute a particular tone. Sometimes it takes up to 4 or 5 adjustments on the press before we are satisfied with the result and can sign off on a press sheet!
