Prior to the CIA report coming out, I made light of our torture - TopicsExpress

Prior to the CIA report coming out, I made light of our torture methods. A few waterboardings here and there in the wake of 9-11 didnt seem that bad to me. However, after reading about some of the abuses we did to these prisoners, I am ashamed. Back in 1993, I went through survival school, which included four days of being captured in a feaux POW camp. They slapped us around, used cold water on us, kept us awake and standing the entire time, shoved us in tiny boxes for extended periods of time, and a number of other torture methods. I remember the final day we were all called to stand in formation. We were exhausted and broken. The guards gave a speech that started with the justification of the methods they were using. That speech slowly transformed into the reasons why the United States does not use such methods. The short version is, We are better than that. We value life. The fake accents of our captors dissipated and we were ordered to do an about face. The giant flag pole that once flew the flag of the fake country of Limnadia was replaced by a giant waiving American flag. We were told to present arms and the Star Spangled Banner began to play. After four days of constant interrogations, belittling, and mild torture, you could hear 75+ grown men sobbing with pride. We ARE better than this. We DONT torture our prisoners. We DONT keep people locked up indefinitely, without a trial. For Gods sake, America, lets go back to what we once were. Lets be better than this.
