Prisoners: Amazingly atmospheric thriller about the disappearance - TopicsExpress

Prisoners: Amazingly atmospheric thriller about the disappearance of two girls and the attempt to recover them. I thought it reminiscent of Zodiac, but that might just be because Jake Gyllenhaal stars as the cop investigating the disappearance. Hugh Jackson again demonstrates he is the actor of the moment in another convincing portrayal in a role totally different to others Ive seen him in this year. The basic plot is that the kids disappear having been seen near an RV. The police find the RV and arrest the driver, a simpleton who says very little. After two days he is released as they can find no evidence and he remains silent. At which point Hugh Jackman kidnaps the simpleton and tortures him for days. The film is about the role and effectiveness of torture as well as the fears that seem to dominate American society. Its two and a half hours long and the time flew past. Extraordinary film that draws you into the parents tragedy. The only weakness is the denouement which is a touch formulaic and doesnt quite match the quality of the rest of the film. Nevertheless, it is a must see. 9/10
