Private Bible Study: 1 Cor 12:4-11 The gifts of the Holy Spirit a means of helping the entire Church. The Holy Spirit gives to one the gift to speak with wisdom. By wisdom is meant, penetrating insight and understanding into the meaning of Scripture. To another, the gift of knowledge is given by the same Spirit. Meaning the ability to be so familiar with Scripture that at a moment’s recall, they can repeat what Scripture has to say on any subject. To another, opportunity is given to develop faith to the point where their confidence and trust in God is so strong; it matches the faith of Abraham of old. To yet another, the gift of healing, enabling them at particular times, through faith to work miraculous healings. This power is not always available but only given to meet extraordinary occasions. Paul, who at one time raised a dead man, could not cure his own thorn in the flesh or heal Timothy’s illness. To some, the gift of dealing with demons (exorcism), others had the gift of prophesy. This refers to two things. Prophesy sometimes meant to ‘stand before’. To stand before a multitude and preach God’s Word. Prophecy also meant to foretell the future as in the case of Agabus, who forewarned of two things. Firstly a famine coming (Acts 11:28) and again that Paul would be bound and sent as a prisoner to Rome (Acts 21:10). Even Paul foretold of his own shipwreck on Malta (Acts 27:25). Some men would have the gift or ability of interpreting tongues (different languages but certainly not the gibberish that is passed off as talking in ‘tongues’ today). All gifts, no matter its nature were given by the will of the same Holy Spirit.
