Priya Manickchand &Guyana Government- Gross Incompetence or Plain Stupidity? By now you must have heard about the abrasive, unprofessional and highly undiplomatic verbal assault on the US Ambassador to Guyana, at his residence, by Priya Manickchand(Acting Foreign Affairs Minister). Let’s s put this in perspective. Guyana exports: Gold (46%); Rice (12%); Aluminum (12 percent); Raw Sugar (9.1percent); crustaceans, hard liquor, molasses saw wood, rough wood, scrap iron, fresh fish, and diamonds. The US market is the largest destination of Guyana’s exports. It represents appx 29% of Guyana exports--followed by Canada 26 percent. Why would any government official, endorsed by the Guyana Government, insult, denigrate or antagonize the Ambassador of their largest export market country? Did we not learn our lesson when Burnham nationalized foreign owned companies (Canadian and US based) in the mid 70’s.? The bauxite, sugar and rice markets in the West suddenly froze and Guyana went bankrupt-$15 foreign currency to leave the country with—guylines!!!.
