Pro-Ed Academy…not fit for 2015 academic year? Pro- Ed Academy, a Christian private school of choice in Swakopmund is building a new school premises in ocean view where the grade zero to three children will be attending school as from Monday 19 January. Even though it says in the school prospectus, that Pro-Ed Academy is a school where scholars receive personalised tuition and are assured a well-balanced development through a well-equipped school, many say the new premises are not an example of a well-equipped school. Very upset parents, who went to drop off their children at the new school on Wednesday, said they were very shocked and worried when they had to leave their children at a building which was still under construction. One parent who politely asked not to be mentioned, said at the time they took their children to school at 07:30 on Wednesday morning, 14 January; they had to stand during the meeting while their children had to sit on the concrete floor. According to the parent, there was no electricity and it was a bit dark inside. “ I even wondered where the pre-primary children are supposed to play during the day since there was no play ground or anything for them to play with” said the upset parent. The distressed parent also said that the building was both a health and safety hazard for the children as there is a lot of dust on the concrete floor and to make matters worse; there is no electricity. Mr Christian Grobler, the principal of the academy said that there is not enough space at the school and they needed five to six classes and that is why they’ve moved the grade 0 to 3 classes to the new premises. He also confirmed that the school has indeed started on Wednesday and that the parents were told that the school would resume on Monday because they still had many things to fix. According to Mr Grobler, the building inspectors were inspecting the school when we called at 13h30 on Thursday. When we went there on Thursday morning, the electricians were testing the electricity. This is a serious matter because it involves small children who cannot protect themselves against anything. The parents say they would have understood if it was a government school because government schools really face problems when it comes to space in schools this time of the year. But, for a private school, where they pay so much towards tuition fees, it is unacceptable. When the Municipality was contacted for comment about the inspection of the building, Ms Aili Gebhardt, the marketing and communication officer of the Swakopmund municipality, said she could not comment on anything at the moment and she also said further communication would be sent to us as soon as the circumstances permitted.
