Probable Pitchers For Game #3, ALCS: Baltimore Orioles @ Kansas City Royals Tuesday, October 14, 8:00 PM EDT , Kauffman Stadium Wei-Yin Chen, LHP @ Jeremy Guthrie, RHP • Wei-Yin Chen: There are two things in Chen’s favor heading into Monday night. 1.) He has pitched exceptionally well in two starts at expansive Kauffman Stadium, going 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 12 2/3 innings here (while posting a 4.86 ERA in four starts against the Royals at Camden Yards). 2.) He also will be pitching on nine days’ rest and, in his career, he has a 3.28 ERA in 17 games in which he’s had six or more days off. Chen will try to bounce back from a rough start to his 2014 postseason. The Tigers tagged the lefty for five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings during the ALDS, but the Royals should provide a better matchup for Chen with four lefties in the lineup. He has downplayed the start, but there’s a buzz in Taiwan, his home country. There were roughly 15 members of the Taiwanese media interviewing him at Kauffman Stadium on Sunday. • Jeremy Guthrie: Guthrie was 13-11 with a 4.13 ERA and a 4.32 FIP for the Royals this season. He tied with James Shields for the most home runs yielded on the team with 23. Guthrie gave up six runs in 15 innings of work against the Orioles in two starts this year getting a no decision on April 26 and taking a loss on May 16. He pitched well down the stretch for the Royals with a 2.40 ERA in five starts in September including a gutsy performance in a 3-1 win over Chicago to clinch a post-season spot for the Royals. Guthrie is a former Oriole, spending five seasons in Baltimore. Guthrie, who will make his first postseason start against Baltimore after a strong finish, hasnt pitched since Sept. 26, however. Guthrie went 0-1 with 3.60 ERA in two starts vs. the Os this year. • Game 3 of the ALCS between the Royals and Orioles had been postponed due to rain. It had been raining in Kansas City all day and is expected to continue all the way through to Tuesday morning. The game will be made up on Thursdays travel day, if necessary. Tuesdays and Wednesdays games will be played at scheduled. The weather forecast for the rest of the week in Kansas City is clear. The Royals lead the best-of-seven series 2-0, so if they win Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursdays makeup game wont be necessary. Here is the updated series schedule (all games will be broadcast on TBS): • Monday, Oct. 13 - rained out • Tuesday, Oct. 14 - Game 3 at 8 p.m. ET (had been 4pm ET) • Wednesday, Oct. 15 - Game 4 at 4 p.m. ET • Thursday, Oct. 16 - Game 5 at 4 p.m. ET (if necessary) • Friday, Oct. 17 - Game 6 at 8 p.m. ET (if necessary) • Saturday, Oct. 18 - Game 7 at 8 p.m. ET (if necessary) • Because of the rain out, the Royals and Orioles would have to play five games in the next five days if the series goes the distance. Theyll have to either use their fifth starter at some point or start someone on short rest in Game 7. Neither team has announced their rotation plans for the rest of the series. Scheduled Game 3 starters Wei-Yin Chen and Jeremy Guthrie will presumably start Tuesday. • Kauffman Stadium has not hosted an ALCS game since 1985, so when the Royals ride their six-game postseason winning streak home to face the Orioles for Game 3, they will be the guests of honor at what promises to be the Midwests most remarkable party so far this year. • The Royals have not trailed in any of the first 19 innings of this series, a pair of thrilling and taut affairs at Camden Yards. The Orioles had not lost back-to-back games at home since June 28-29, and no team has won a best-of-seven LCS after losing the first two games at home. • Adam Jones may be getting his playoff stroke going at just the right time. His third-inning homer off Yordano Ventura in Game 2 marked Jones first career postseason extra-base hit, coming in his 11th postseason game. The Orioles are well acquainted with the impact that Jones can provide on both sides of the ball, but he had been patiently waiting for an October moment like this one. Jones was 5-for-43 with no extra-base hits in the postseason before the homer. • Kansas Citys Jarrod Dyson, who has the word Zoom shaved into his head, is 0-for-2 in stolen-base attempts during this series. Dyson was nailed trying to swipe second base in the seventh inning of Game 2. • Nelson Cruz owns 20 career LCS RBIs, good for a 10th-place tie all time with Reggie Jackson and Jim Edmonds. Bernie Williams holds the all-time LCS record with 33 RBIs.
