Probably about 15 years ago I was on a multi-day paddling trip on the James River from Scottsville to either Maidens or Richmond. Kai Groner was with me. We stopped on some rocky sandbar to explore. There we found a bizarre combination of skeletal remains. The bones of a perfectly articulated raptor with screws placed into its legs and a pair of careful, thin coils of cloth wrapped around those screws. The talons of this raptor were locked in what definitely turned out to be a death-grip with the still perfectly-articulated skeleton of a snake, somewhere between 4 and 5 feet in length. The two were wrapped together in a mutual death grip. I know very little of falconry. What the hell were those strange things implanted in the birds legs? This was before the advent of cheap digital cameras or smart phones, so I dont have a photo. All I have is Kai as my witness (and I hope that he will weigh in here on anything I may have forgotten).
