Probe into why rider failed to see marshal on the track PETALING JAYA: Preliminary investigations into Saturday’s tragedy at Sepang International Circuit showed that the incident was not due to a failure to follow guidelines. Chief executive officer Datuk Razlan Razali said this was based on the initial report and video footage of the incident. He added that investigations would focus on understanding how the superbike rider failed to see the safety marshal on the track. Razlan said the veteran safety marshal, Satish Suppiah, 44, had done everything according to MotoGP protocol, the highest standard for two-wheel motorsports, adding that SIC would help Satish’s family in every way they could. He stressed that the superbike rider, Muhammad Izzat Mohd Abdul Hakim, 17, must not be blamed by any party in the heat of the moment, adding that they hoped the teenager would recover quickly so that he could assist in the investigations to ascertain what went wrong. “We fail to understand why the rider was unable to see the lone marshal waving the chequered flag, especially when the rider was by himself on the huge track. But it could be any number of reasons so we do not want to speculate until investigations are done,” he said. Razlan said SIC had stressed time and again that motorsport activities were dangerous and that anything could happen to the riders and track officials.
