Professional Deck Builder, July/August 2013, has an excellent article on building Block Retaining Walls using interlocking concrete blocks. These walls are called segmental retaining walls or SRWs in the industry. A great product for many applications around the residential property. Easy installation, great appearance options, and water draining features. Consider for any wall upto approximately 4 feet height with no to little slope at the top of and bottom of the wall; otherwise, get a Professional Engineer involved. Soil conditions (from sandy to clay and silt) can make a difference in the design for the necessary height to be achieved.
