Professor Tariq Mansoor, Principal and CMS, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University has circulated guidelines regarding the prevention and control of Ebola virus, as issued by State Surveillance Officer, IDSP, Lucknow. Through a letter sent to all Chairmen, Medical Superintendent, Deputy Medical Superintendents, CMO Incharge, Casualty, Teacher Incharges and Sister Incharges, JN Medical College, the College administration has informed that Ebola virus is spread in human population through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other body fluids of infected people or animals like chimpanzee, monkey, fruit bats and antelopes, as well as indirect contact with contaminated environment affected with the virus. It further stressed that Ebola effect is often characterized by sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases both internal and external bleeding, whereas the laboratory findings include lowering of white blood cell and platelet counts and elevated liver enzymes. The letter however made it clear that casual contact with people in public places, handling money, groceries or swimming in a pool did not make Ebola threat. Mosquitoes too did not transmit the Ebola virus. The virus is easily killed by soap, bleach, sunlight or drying. In the absence of effective treatment or vaccine, raising awareness regarding prevention was the only way to reduce human infection and death. Animal meat should be thoroughly cooked before consumption. Close physical contact with Ebola patients should be avoided and gloves and other protective equipments should be worn during their look-after. The dead bodies of patients should be buried/cremated following bio-safety precautions. The guidelines prescribed that the health care workers, dealing with Ebola patients, should wear face protection, which included Medical mask and goggle, a clean long-sleeved gown and gloves. The samples taken from suspected cases for diagnosis should be handled by trained staff and processed in suitably equipped laboratories.
