Profound Though For The Day: Discussing geoengineering (weather manipulation) last night raised the idea that people would panic if they knew the worst and this is something I dont agree with, no matter what the subject; an alien invasion, a drought or whatever. Here are my thoughts: There is one MAJOR flaw in this idea of not reporting on something because people would panic; to have this idea one has to maintain that politicians and experts are somehow better than your average person so immune to panic. Or, that because they know more that they would handle the truth better (and this is a self defeating argument because if that were true then the public would also handle the truth better if they knew more!). Politicians were voted in by the people in any case and therefore have no special rights other than to manage the respective country to which we are referring. If the argument is that they were put there to deal with problems so that the public do not need to worry then in my view they would be overstepping their mark to assume that this meant hiding their activities from the people that installed them. There are others who believe that the majority of people are too dumb to understand and this I do not agree with either as a reason to hide governmental activity from the people. If they are too dumb then it means that the politicians they have voted in would be prize idiots, having been voted in as the best dumb out of the lot. And then, really in the first place, why would we have to worry about everybody panicking anyway; if people are so dumb then a bit of panic in the herd would not matter just as a bunch of flies or cockroaches would not matter if killed-- there are always more of them! Now, I just KNOW that I havent presented all possible variations or reasons here and someone is going to throw some other reason into the pot to be stirred around, but go on, give it your best!
