Program Description AMIDEAST is now accepting applications for the 2014‐2016 English Access Microscholarship Program, funded by the United States Department of State through the American Consulate General in Jerusalem. This 2‐year program targets Palestinian youth in grades eight and nine who would not normally have access to such opportunities. Those accepted into the program will learn English and develop other communication skills; gain a more in‐depth understanding of U.S. culture and society; develop civic values through community service activities; and prepare for educational and career opportunities that enable them to contribute to their society’s development. The Access program will benefit non‐elite youth in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. PROGRAM COMPONENTS The two-year curriculum will consist of 360 instructional hours broken down as follows: 240 hours of English language instruction 85 hours of intensive summer English language instruction 15 hours of public speaking and discourse analysis training 20 hours of cultural enrichment, leadership development, and community service activities ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS In order to be considered for English Access Microscholarship Program, a student must meet all of the following requirements: Come from an underprivileged/disadvantaged background Have an A average grade in both overall average and in English Must be entering high school grades 9 or 10 in Fall 2014 Must be born before June 1, 2001 NOT an American Citizen or Green Card Holder Be able to participate in a two-year English training program beginning in September 2014 and ending in April 2016 Be willing to participate in American Cultural Enrichment and Community Service activities Be a resident of one of the following cities/districts: Nablus Jericho Gaza City Ramallah Jerusalem Rafah Jenin Bethlehem Khan Younis Qalqiliya Hebron North Gaza Salfeet Tulkarem Gaza Middle Area
