Programs, ideologies, philosophies, theologies -- all are frames of meaning which differ in degree of conviction they require from us, the amount of sustained passion we assent to confer upon them. It a frame of meaning conforms to what feels like a true inner reality it can sustain itself across millennia as Christianity has done; if it does not, it withers away regardless how much energy defenders expend in its service.
