Progressives United Linda, The turkeys in the oven (and tofurkey for my cousin). My dad and I watched The Godfather on TV, and my mom and I called my 94-year-old grandmother on the East Coast to tell her how much we love her. Were thankful this year, but not everyone is getting their fair share of Americas bounty. Every time I see an ad for Walmart, Im reminded of the plague of huge corporations that refuse to pay their employees a living wage. I even saw a report of Walmart holding a charity food drive for its own employees! For the third year in a row, some Walmart workers are going on strike on Black Friday to demand a living wage and regular, full-time hours. Momentum for change is building, and members of Progressives United are lining up to show we have their backs: Stand up for workers rights and your rights as a taxpayer: pledge to boycott Walmart this holiday season, and share this important Thanksgiving pledge with friends and family on Facebook. Stand with workers and boycott Walmart! Walmart doesnt just pay its employees too little to live with dignity -- it relies on government programs to make sure its employees survive at all. In addition to making so little money theyre eligible for charity, Walmart employees are routinely eligible for food stamps, Medicaid, and other programs that arent meant for people with employers who are fully capable of paying them a living wage. Walmart is counting on American tax dollars to make up the difference. In effect, we are paying more taxes to boost Walmarts profits. Its outrageous. And Walmarts corporate-sponsored Republicans in Washington and state legislatures across the country dont stop there when it comes to exploiting workers for their own profit -- they want to try to reduce their taxes even further by actually cutting these same assistance programs.
