Project Officer — GIS Spatial Analyst, Water Program Location: Winnipeg, Canada General The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) has a growing portfolio of work in the field of water resources management including integrating science and policy for sound water management and water security in local, regional and international contexts. IISDs Water Program has been working on tools and approaches for improving the understanding of land and water resources and improving decision-making for sustainable development. IISDs water program works closely with the IISD-Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) for bridging science and water policy, on watershed based bioeconomies and integrated approaches such as the water-energy-food nexus. IISD wishes to engage a Project Officer-GIS Spatial Analyst to support this body of work. This position will be a full-time position based in Winnipeg to provide research, analysis and support using GIS and other spatial analysis and modelling tools. Specific IISDs water program is focussing on a few areas of water-related policy research, in Canada and internationally. These include, but are not limited to the watershed bioeconomy approach, watershed ecosystem services and multiple benefits, agricultural land-water interactions and water quality, water-energy-food nexus, etc. The Project Officer shall contribute through GIS and other technical spatial analyses, modelling, database management, research, visualization and communications associated with projects undertaken within the Water program of IISD. Under the direction of the Director, Water Program, or their delegate, the Project Officer will: • Coordinate the collection of data and information on integrated watershed projects such as watershed bioeconomy and other Water Program initiatives, both regionally and internationally; • Conduct GIS and modelling-based analyses of geography and land resources, water quality and quantity, climate change, satellite imagery, etc. including mapping data and information for strong, effective visual impact and decision-support; • Conduct other research and analysis and reporting on specific issues; • Support the management and implementation of other initiatives within the Water Program as required, including but not limited to: o Assistance with collaborative planning and management; o Attending and contributing to meetings; o Writing project documents; o Maintaining contact with key partners and information sources; o Working with partner organizations. • Assist with the maintenance of IISDs institutional presence in Winnipeg, including the maintenance of relationships within the government, non-governmental and private sectors; • Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications The Project Officer — GIS Spatial Analyst should possess the following qualifications: • Trained in spatial analysis with strong GIS and remote sensing skills. • Bachelors degree in an environment related field. • Well-read in sustainable development topics generally; knowledge related to water and land management. • Strong research, database management, data analysis and writing skills. • Strong communications and outreach skills. • Strong organizational skills. • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team. Location This full time position will be based at IISDs head office in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Starting date: February 1, 2015 (estimate).
