Project Rebirths National September 11 Memorial & Museum immersive film exhibit, Rebirth at Ground Zero, was not only named one of the top five reasons to visit by New York, it has been coined by visitors as the one ray of hope in the entire museum that shows joy and recovery are possible after tragedy and loss. Rebirth at Ground Zero takes viewers on a powerful journey of recovery. As they step into the darkened room, they hear the rumble of the World Trade Center towers collapsing. Screens on three sides illuminate with the still-smoldering site. Composer Philip Glass’s score is first somber. Then it begins to brighten as time-lapse photography reveals the hum of activity clearing the pit, and then the Freedom Tower stretching skyward. Finally, there are the voices. Their words are powerful, initially filled with shock and despair. But by the end, the five New Yorkers impacted by the 9/11 attacks have found peace. The steel and glass construction, soaring music, and reflections on coping and moving forward carry audiences to a place of strength and hope. - Fourteen 35-millimeter film time-lapse cameras captured the rebuild from 2002 to 2014 - Nine people affected by 9/11 were interviewed over eight years - Directed by Jim Whitaker, original score by Philip Glass - Part of Project Rebirth’s suite of 11 films including Peabody Awards-winning Rebirth - Released in 2011, Rebirth chronicled over eight years the emotional journeys of a teenager, a firefighter, a construction worker and a young woman who lost loved ones on 9/11, as well as a woman seriously burned in the South Tower - Project Rebirth’s films are the most complete public video record of people coping with grief and traumatic loss Project Rebirth From the earliest showings of Project Rebirth’s content, it became clear its stories of recovery were powerful and unique tools to facilitate healing and foster hope, and to study the journey of grief. The not-for-profit Project Rebirth uses its films and the resources and talents of its diverse team to create resilience programs for First Responders, Military & Veterans, Community Leaders, Educators, and Medical & Mental Health Professionals. Project Rebirth films and programs have been used for resilience workshops during Ride 2 Recovery Veteran Cycling Challenges and in towns stricken by disaster like Greensburg, Kansas. Project Rebirth has created resilience programs shared by First Responders and active duty Military and designed resilience workshops for First Responders, Women Veterans, those caring for disabled veterans and Mental Health workers dealing with disaster survivors. Project Rebirth film content has been incorporated into classes at Georgetown University and Columbia University and other colleges and high schools. Film participants Tanya Villanueva Tepper and Tim Brown have created and run interactive programs for high school and college students. Project Rebirth: a resilience resource for all who serve community & country.
