Prolific actor/filmmaker Paul Mazursky has passed away. R.I.P. He was most noteworthy for his films as a director ala Down and Out in Beverly Hills starring Richard Dreyfuss and Nick Nolte (a reconfiguration of Jean Renoirs Boudu Saved From Drowning), Moon Over Parador (also with Richard Dreyfuss; probably the best film about a doppelganger assuming a leaders identity) and a modern version of The Tempest starring Gena Rowlands, Susan Sarandon and fellow filmmaker John Cassavetes. He often starred in his own films and made notable appearances in Blackboard Jungle, The Twilight Zone, Orson Welles The Other Side of the Wind, and recently The Sopranos. His acting debut was in Stanley Kubricks directorial debut, Fear and Desire from 1953, where he played an American soldier struggling with his inner demons. These struggling artists who succeeded are a disappearing breed. They are the ones who really knew how much hard work and lifestyle upheaval it took to shine.
