Prominent SA artists Leora Farber, Hasan Essop and Husain Essop share their birthday with historical, international greats Willem de Kooning and Bridget Riley Leora Farber (born 1964) is a Johannesburg-based artist. She currently works as an artist, academic, arts-writer, editor, and curator. Hasan and Husain Essop (born 1985 in Cape Town) are interested in the role of young Muslim males in a secular environment and have documented their own experiences across the globe. In their digitally composited photographs, the artists use only themselves as subjects, as Islam forbids the depiction of the human figure. They are the Standard Bank Young Artist (Visual Art) for 2014. Willem de Kooning (1904 – 1997) was a Dutch American abstract expressionist artist who was born in the Netherlands. In the post-World War II era, de Kooning painted in a style that came to be referred to as Abstract expressionism or Action painting, and was part of a group of artists that came to be known as the New York School. Bridget Louise Riley (born 1931 in London) is an English painter who is one of the foremost exponents of Op art. She currently lives and works in London and France.
