Promises Made and Kept Read: Romans 4:1-25 For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness…and being fully assured that what God has promised, He was able also to perform. (Romans 4:3 and 21 NASB) Have you ever had a promise made to you and then broken? Was that a “yes” answer? I’m sure this has happened to most of us. Did your trust in that person drop or at least be called in question? Now for the tough question. Have you ever made a promise to someone else and failed to keep it? Was that a weak “yes” that I heard? I have to confess that I am guilty as charged. Fortunately I was able to make amends and the relationship was not severed, but that isn’t always the case. A much different scenario took place between Abraham and God. The Lord promised Abraham a son who would be the first in a long line of descendants. Abraham would become the father of a great nation and through him all the families of the earth would be blessed. Abraham’s faith in this promise was tested by time as he waited for years to see the promise fulfilled. Then after both he and Sarah were well past the physical age for child bearing a tiny baby boy was laid in his arms. He was named Isaac meaning the son of laughter. When the child reached adolescence God spoke again. “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.” (Genesis 22:2 NASB) The command was clear. No mistake. Without a word of debate, Abraham set out to obey God’s command. Abraham’s love for God proved to be greater than his love for his son. He believed in the character of God and knew he was not bound by the physical. He also knew from past experience that a promise made by God was a promise kept. Are you a promise keeper? Keeping the promises we make are a signature of our character before God. Let me encourage you to think carefully before making a promise. Promises made with little intent to fulfill them are worthless. Whenever you make a promise to someone make sure you keep it at all costs. Doing so will help solidify your relationship with that person, and you will receive a “high five” from the Lord for a job well done.
