Promissory note:: My first movie debt owed to 2015 will be Selma. There are a number of films from the 2014 roster I am still yet to see. And yes, Im ashamed of myself for it. Foxcatcher. Nightcrawler. Birdman. Interstellar. Frank. Etc.. But its time to straighten up and fly right, chief. None of that behind schedule nonsense this year. The 2015 films on the critical acclaim radar (and of course, some not on it) will all be seen within reasonable time of their official release. Selma, for me, will absolutely be first. Because any film like this is immediately a visceral argument against apathy, nihilism, and the unfortunate belief some hold that film is an insignificant form of empty escapism. I havent seen this one yet, of course, but already from what Im hearing its up there with Spike Lees Malcolm X, and that alone is saying a lot. Maybe, one wonders, it will register as a film powerful enough to stop at least one person, somewhere, from happily calling himself and his friends nigga. Or, at the very least, get one clown to pull his pants up.
