Prompted by a recent TV show here (in Australia) that covers the invasion of the Romans and others (into Britain). I cant remember the name at this time but will look it up in due course. First episode describes the invasion and massacre of the Druids etc, expansion of the empire and the new innovations that came with it; ie buildings, roads, villas with heating and water supply. It went on to say how four hundred years later as the Roman empire was under duress, back home in Rome, (advancing Visigoths etc) troops were withdrawn and the money ran out or was no longer being sent over. The narrator then describes how Britain fell into decline and reverted to previous methods of survival, ways of living etc. What really peeves me is (and Im sure others have had similar reactions) that the inference is made that Britain went backwards (hence the label Dark Ages) .......... However, my issue is that, as the Romans themselves (and those Britons that were able to adopt that way of living) could no longer maintain that way of living because of the withdrawal of finances and troops...... how does any expect the average person to manage to do so? This is aside from any cultural or political reasons for not wanting to do so. The so called Dark Ages in my humble opinion, appears to be more of an Age of relative peace and general harmony (albeit somewhat slow progress). Yes there were various fractions squabbling, but overall there were different groups living and sustaining their own particular idiosyncrasies unique to their way of life.
