Proper Clothing Have you ever been asked to leave a place because you weren’t properly dressed? That could turn out to be a rather embarrassing situation. Restaurants are especially notorious for requiring a certain type of dress. In today’s society there are many events that call for special clothing, namely weddings and funerals. So was it also in New Testament times. In Matthew 22, Jesus tells the parable of the wedding feast. In this parable one invited guest did not have on the proper clothing (vs. 11-12). Because this guest was not dressed properly it was said of him “…Bind him hand and foot, and cast him out into the outer darkness; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth” (vs. 13). Jesus told this parable to indicate that not everyone would gain entrance into heaven. God has certain requirements for anyone wanting to enter. It is not enough to know what God’s word says. Belief in God and His word is meaningless (James 2:19) unless it is accompanied by action (James 2:24). Most people will be lost not because they don’t believe in God but because they don’t believe His word. Jesus is the saviour of the body, the church, and there is only one (Eph. 5:23, 4:4). It is not up to us to determine how to dress for “the wedding feast”. It is our duty to dress in the manner that God has already prescribed.
