Proper Diet is a Defense Against Diabetes Eye Complications What Can LIONS do to educate the community concerning proper diet and exercise to reduce the chances of a diagnosis of diabetes? What can we do about assisting those who have diabetes to avoid eye-care complications? Most LIONS Clubs will not have a dietician or diabetes educator among its members. Therefore, if a club seeks to serve the community through an education program, an outside source will be needed. This is another opportunity to partner to exceed the Centennial Service Challenge. Eye care complications caused by diabetes steal sight and impact lives within our community. Who can we partner with to educate the community? The Michigan State University Extension Service has the resources needed to assist us in planning and staffing an educational program for the community. “Dining With Diabetes” is a series of lectures/seminars that many Extension offices are currently presenting in many communities. A local Lions club could partner by sharing the cost, assisting to promote the event or providing a health screening component to compliment the current program. Lions are known for their sight services such as buying glasses or providing medical procedures at no cost to those who do not have the means to obtain proper eye care. However, our story of service can be enhanced, by assisting the community in gaining the knowledge about diet and healthy lifestyles to avoid diabetes and related eye complications. Look around, with whom can we partner to leverage the impact that we can have on our community? Until tomorrow, remember, WE SERVE!! Jerome Thompson - Alabama Lions are Hands-On
