Prophet’s Birth Divides Malawi Muslims Malawi Muslims are converging to the country’s commercial city of Blantyre to celebrate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) slated for Sunday, with a rallying call to all Muslims to spread a peaceful message of coexistence.Celebrated under the theme, “Islam: the Religion of Peace”, the event is expected to draw “an overwhelming” crowd from across the secular, but diverse religious southern African nation.The Prophet’s birth falls on the 12th day of Rabi-ul-Awwal (the third month in the Islamic calendar). This year, it falls on Saturday, January 3. Many Muslims see the prophet’s birthday as an important time to learn about and reflect on Muhammad’s life. Lectures and speeches are often recorded and published as podcasts. Around the world, celebrations of the prophet’s birthday include stalls selling Islamic books, leaflets, clothing, prayer mats and other materials. “Un-Islamic” Over the years, the event has gained momentum and national appeal. But some Muslims criticize the celebration as “un-Islamic.”
