Proposed Far Rockaway Shelter No More! My office recently - TopicsExpress

Proposed Far Rockaway Shelter No More! My office recently learned that the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) was planning on opening a men’s homeless shelter on Beach 8th Street in Far Rockaway. The proposed site was located in close proximity to a public school and three institutions for girls. This seemed to be the height of negligent planning, especially since we just opened a new shelter in the Rockaways just three months ago. I immediately drafted a letter in conjunction with academic and religious leaders in Far Rockaway to take a stand against the placement. After holding extensive conversations and meetings with the mayoral administration, the community and other stakeholders, DHS has decided that the proposed men’s homeless shelter will not be opening in Rockaway. Locating a men’s shelter near several schools in a district already saturated by other transient housing facilities was simply unacceptable. I am pleased that we were able to collectively voice our concerns and reach a solution with Mayor De Blasio to develop Far Rockaway. This is a major victory for our community!
